Occupational Therapists work with children to meet their highest potential so they can participate fully in school and social situations and to do the activities they want and need to do. We love being able to adapt the environment and/or task to meet a child’s needs. We emphasize a multi-disciplinary team approach when working with children. We address:
- Play skills: interacting with toys and peers
- Self care skills: feeding/eating, dressing, self help routines (washing hands
- Fine motor skills: using one’s hands to interact with tools, toys and materials to be successful in one’s environment
- Visual perception: seeing and interpreting (analyzing and giving meaning to) the visual information in the environment
- Sensory processing and regulation: taking in, processing, and responding appropriately to sensory cues in the environment
- Motor planning skills: coming up with an idea, sequencing the steps, executing the motoric plan
- Adaptive Equipment: Assess, recommend, and obtain adaptive equipment to increase participation
Your child will need an occupational therapy evaluation to determine if s/he qualifies for services.
How to obtain an evaluation:
- Contact your local Health Department (Early Intervention) for children younger than 3 years of age.
- Contact your local school district for children 3 years and older.
