We did not choose autism; we chose our child — and we will always choose him.
Sen, our “little one”, is joyfully energetic, spontaneous, forgiving, and endlessly resilient. Diagnosed at two years old, when he lost his last three words — “eat,” “drink,” “mama” — he is now in his twenties, still nonverbal, and has been part of the Racker family for nearly his entire life.
This journey has stretched, tenderized, and strengthened us as a family. And in this community we call home, we are grateful that we have not had to walk it alone. Through triumphs, setbacks, and the long rollercoaster stretches in between, Racker has seen us through it all — and there is rarely a dull moment.
In our most uncertain moments — from educational displacement, to the height of COVID, to periods of health and behavioral crisis — Racker stood beside us. There was the “mama bear” team who adjusted supports and even test-kitchened recipes at home to soothe his pain. There was the DSP who spent sleepless nights disinfecting every inch of a hospital room to keep him safe. There were residential staff who worked long and flexible hours, and those who answered texts and emails — on and off shifts — simply because they cared. And there has also been laughter and creativity woven throughout Meaningful Day programs.
The days can be long. Staff change often. Systems remain imperfect. Crisis comes and goes. But again and again, we meet people who show up — with heart. People who stay, even on the hard days. People who speak truth because they care. People who keep choosing to make a difference, even when it is inconvenient.
For families like ours, a calm, “boring” day — when our son is safe and we can move through the world as “business as usual” — is a priceless gift. And it is not possible without the people at Racker.
Racker’s presence reflects who we are as a community — one that sees our most vulnerable as fellow human beings who deserve safety, dignity, connection, and joy.
So today, I invite you to support Racker in whatever way feels right for you. Every gift matters. And when each of us does what we can, it adds up. It changes lives. Thank you!
With gratitude,
Sen’s Mom
